UK authorities in talks over US fast-track border option

The chief executive of the US Travel Association says he hopes US and UK authorities are close to an agreement to give UK visitors the option to fast-track US border checks.

Discussions are ongoing to extend the Global Entry programme to allow frequent flyers from the UK to streamline their US entry process for a period of five years by providing biometric information and undergoing security checks in advance of travel.

“It is in the hands of the authorities, but I know that the UK is where the most dialogue is taking place,” said Roger Dow.

“If they can reach an agreement it would be a huge home run as we have so many UK visitors and there is still a lagging perception about the entry process which may be putting people off.”

He added: “It is basically about information sharing and it is voluntary, so I can’t see any reason why anybody wouldn’t want to take the option if it is available that allows them to walk past the lines.”

Speaking at the International Pow Wow conference in Los Angeles, Dow also issued a warning to the UK government that it could shoot itself in the foot if it continued to raise air passenger duty.

“You have to be very careful in a tax policy that you don’t kill the thing you are trying to grow,” he said.

“The passenger often doesn’t know because the tax is hidden in the airfare, but eventually the price increases will become too much and they will opt to travel elsewhere or not at all.”

This is a one-of-a-kind experience here in South Florida. If you can walk and breathe then you can Sea Trek !!

The Sea Trek Helmet Diving System is controlled by a compressor system that supplies compressed breathing air to the helmets via a series of filtration components on to a control console and manifold which regulates the air flow to Sea Trekking participants. Unlike deep sea diving, the participant’s entire head stays dry throughout the entire experience.

The Sea Trek Reef Encounter at Miami Seaquarium lasts for approximately 90 minutes including an orientation session and will cost you $99 plus tax per participant. The program fee includes same day admission to the park.

2 Centre Holidays in Florida

My wife Donna and myself are passionate about travel and have been fortunate enough to travel extensively throughout Europe and North America. We have also enjoyed holidays to Egypt, Cyprus & Turkey.

With our love of Florida, we took the leap of faith and invested in a beautiful villa on Highlands Reserve Golf & Country Club near Disney World in Orlando back in 2003.  To make ends meet, we rented out our luxury villa and soon found that we had more bookings than we had available dates in our own villa – we therefore approached other owners on Highlands Reserve to offer them these surplus bookings. Off the back of this, we developed a successful villa rental website offering private villas first on Highlands Reserve and then Windsor Hills Resort, then we added Emerald Island Resort and recently we added Watersong Resort – all of these luxury villa developments are in the Orlando area catering to the self sufficient traveller who prefers to arrange their own flights & accommodation.

We found however that after numerous holidays in Florida that there is more to Florida than the theme parks of Orlando and that we started enjoying visiting other parts of Florida including the Keys, the beautiful Gulf Coast islands, Miami, St Augustine and last year, we took our first ever Caribbean cruise – what an eye opener that was !!

So we thought why not make other Orlando travellers aware that they too could enjoy these additional locations and means of travel.

We therefore decided that we should make the investment into the very successful travel company called Travel Counsellors and for Donna to become a Personal Travel Counsellor.  Yes I agree, the name conjures up thoughts of someone who you go to when you experience problems with your holiday – unfortunate name, but in reality, a Travel Counsellor is in fact a home based Independent Travel Agent who through the massive buying power of Travel Counsellors has access to hundreds of travel suppliers and can offer all of the advantages of an independent travel agent, with the added benefits of being able to book directly with suppliers, enabling Donna to offer competitive prices you could not find on the high street.

By being fully independent a Travel Counsellor is not bound by a specific tour operator, therefore can mix and match flights and/or accommodation and create multi centre, tailor made itineraries using Travel Counsellors award winning travel technology. Flying into one airport and departing from another is very simple and not at all stressful to organise.

Now picture this – you have been going to Orlando more than once and visited the parks more times than you care to mention – very enjoyable as it is, but is it just getting a bit too samey !!

Have you considered something different from just Orlando ?

What about combining your luxury villa holiday with a luxury Caribbean Cruise, or stay in a splendid beach facing hotel or villa on the Gulf Coast. You could also stay in Key West, Cayman Islands, Cancun, or any other exotic Caribbean Island that takes your fancy. Have you considered how cheap it is to fly by small jet from Orlando to Key West which is just over 1 hour away ? Yes the drive down to Key West is breath taking, but do you really want to drive for a whole day to get there  and the same back – that’s 2 days out of your holiday wasted driving in a car !!

Why not also combine in a city break in Miami after Key West – thereby starting your holiday flying into Orlando, picking up a hire car and spending a week in a luxury villa in Orlando, then fly to Key West and stay in a beautiful hotel and then finishing off your holiday by flying to and staying in an amazing seafront condo in Miami – you could then flying home from Miami.

Alternatively – why not look further afield and have a city break in New York, San Francisco, or Las Vegas etc…..?

What about the ultimate in stylish luxury travel …. Did you know that there are specialist operators where you can charter a private jet – the sky is the limit and not as expensive as you may expect !!

For your complete peace of mind everything you book with through Travel Counsellors is 100% financially protected by ATOL and the unique Travel Counsellors Trust. Travel Counsellors are the only travel company to offer this complete financial protection.  No ifs, no buts…. It’s that simple !!

Since we started working with Travel Counsellors, we have had excellent feedback from clients who say that the service and expertise provided is second to none.

Please note that Travel Counsellors are not involved in any way with the rental of private villas featured on our websites and the Travel Counsellors financial protection does not apply to villas rented through our websites – they are completely separate transactions.

“Winters Tale” – A Visit to Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Dolphin Tale the MovieWe went to see “Winters Tale” at the cinema in Venice FL and we were surprised to find that the film was set in Clearwater Florida, just 90 minutes drive from where we were watching the film – WOW – that just made the film even more interesting. The film is very captivating and really tugged at the heart strings – so inspirational and we all really enjoyed watching it.

So no sooner had we seen the film and returned back to our villa, that we checked out http://www.seewinter.com to get more details on where Winter was being kept and how to get there. We then planned a day trip to Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) to see Winter the dolphin at her home and to learn more about what is happening at CMA.

On arrival we were stunned to see that it looked exactly the same as in the film – the building, the surroundings…all the same !! At every turn we were constantly saying…do you remember this place in the film ?  So wicked to actually be on a real film set and that CMA was not just more Hollywood hype !!

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is very different from the commercialised aquariums like SeaWorld and SeaLife Centres in that their mission mission is marine life rescue and rehabilitation and not just entertainment. That means that all of the animals you see here have been rescued from some traumatic experience in the wild and are recovering with expert care, with the hope that they will eventually be released back into the wild.  At CMA there are injured turtles, dolphins, sea otters, sting rays, sharks and more all being given expert care.

The whole place is very well organised and not over crowded with scheduled displays and educational talks. Shortly after we arrived we saw Nicholas the dolphin who was rescued on Christmas Eve as a young dolphin who had become stranded ashore with his mother – Both Nicholas and his mother Noelle had severe sunburn and unfortunately Noelle did not survive.  Nicholas was badly burnt on his head & back but managed to recover although he now has permanent scarring. Since he had never learnt how to fend for himself in the wild, he has had to become a permanent resident of CMA. Nicholas really enjoys entertaining the visitors of CMA and particularly loves to soak everyone who gets too close – you can see Nicholas on the upper level or through the lower level portholes below water.

Baby Hope is another young dolphin at the CMA who was rescued trying to nurse from it’s dead mother – at only 2 months old she did not have a chance in the wild. With around the clock care, she is doing great and still feeding from a bottle when we saw her.

The highlight of our visit was the opportunity to meet Winter, the real-life star of the movie “Dolphin Tale.” At the age of 3 months old, she got caught in a crab trap line which got caught around her tail. Just as depicted in the film, a young boy discovered her and she was rushed to the CMA for rehabilitation. Sadly due to the circulation being cut off to her tail flukes, she lost the end of her tail. Rather than allowing her to die (or live without swimming), the researchers at CMA contacted a leading human prosthetic limb manufacturer who made her a prosthetic tail and taught her how to swim again !! She continues to receive physical therapy and will spend the rest of her life at the aquarium. Winter has become a source of inspiration for kids and adults around the country who struggle with their own injuries or prosthetic limbs. Experiments in improved material technology to adapt the new tail for Winter has helped human prosthetic limb wearers as well with more comfortable artificial limbs.

All over the CMA site there are boards showing the various scenes in the film that were shot in that particular location – it really brings the film to life.

Due to the success of the film and subsequent media and public interest, CMA has managed to raise money to build a new much better facility to replace the original humble waste water treatment works facilites they originally started in.

Check out their website http://www.seewinter.com to see the latest news and then pay them a visit – it will be a day to remember.

SeaWorld Orlando announces details for massive expansion including themed land Antarctica

Part of the biggest expansion in SeaWorld Orlando’s history is designed to make theme-park guests feel as if they’re not in Florida anymore. Instead, they will head south via an immersive “land” known as Antarctica — Empire of the Penguin, set to open in 2013.

seaworld_600
“When you enter it, you will know you have entered a different place,” Terry Prather, president of SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment’s three Orlando parks, said Tuesday in detailing the expansion.

It’s a strategy already employed by Universal Orlando with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, in that resort’s Islands of Adventure theme park, and on the drawing boards for Walt Disney World, which intends to construct an area in Disney’s Animal Kingdom based on the film “Avatar.”

SeaWorld Orlando unveiled on Tuesday the first concrete details and artists’ renderings of its two-year, three-pronged expansion. All three additions “were designed specifically for this park and this market. You can’t see them or experience them anywhere else on the planet,” creative director Brian Morrow said. “They’re ours.”

The Antarctica drawings show a dark, rugged, snowcapped, stony scene with penguins watching from above. Prather confirmed the new area will incorporate a ride, dining and merchandise outlets.

Experts attribute the renewed interest in themed “lands” to the phenomenal success of Wizarding World, which since its opening in June 2010 has propelled Universal Orlando to record gains in attendance and guest spending on food and merchandise.

“It takes more than just one single ride to really move the checker on the board — the checker being the consumer who comes to Orlando,” said Dennis Speigel, a theme-park consultant in Cincinnati. “As we saw during the last two years, Harry Potter really moved the checker.”

All-encompassing lands can help drive in-park spending by guests through their highly themed shops and restaurants. The shops in Wizarding World even peddle some Harry Potter products that can’t be purchased anywhere else.

“I think that’s very important and very much a justification to the board of directors when you say, ‘Look, we’re going to spend $200 million on this,’ or $100 million or $300 million,” Speigel said. “It’s not just about selling tickets because, as we know in many cases, most of the people who come to the parks in this day and age come on a discounted package. You’ve got to get the butterbeer and whatever else.”

Most details remain under wraps for the Antarctica ride, though it will be the “coldest theme-park attraction in the word,” according to SeaWorld officials. The attraction’s exact temperature was not shared.

The sit-down ride will follow the journey of a tiny penguin, said Morrow, the creative director.

The project is already well into its planning stages. “We are riding prototypes,” he said.

Construction walls for Antarctica are scheduled to go up in January. The new area will be built in the Penguin Plaza portion of the park.

Two other new attractions are set to open next spring.

Upon entering TurtleTrek, guests will first pass through a pair of aquariums, one with manatees and the other with sea turtles, and then enter a first-of-its-kind, domed, 3-D theater. Images of sea turtles, created in what SeaWorld called “hyper-real” CGI, will appear to swim around and above guests.

The film will follow the life of a female turtle, starting from the nest, Morrow said. Along the way, guests will encounter several oceans, other animals, shipwrecks and danger — both natural and man-made, he said.

TurtleTrek is under construction on the previous site of the Manatee Rescue attraction.

Also new next year will be Freshwater Oasis, in SeaWorld’s limited-admission park Discovery Cove. Guests will wade through a rain-forest spring as small marmoset monkeys play in the canopy around them. Visitors will then enter a faux sinkhole and wind up swimming alongside Asian river otters. The area will include secluded, private beaches and a swim-up lounge dubbed Flooded Terrace.

Swim with Sea Turtles, Angelfish, Dolphins, Rays & Sharks at Disney Epcot in Orlando

Epcot

When we visit Florida we always spend a day at Epcot - it is easily my favourite Disney Park and has so much to offer for all the family.

One of my favourite attractions at Epcot is “The Seas with Nemo and Friends” which now offers several different experiences to enable you to dive in to the aquarium and join the fish. How cool is that ?

The Seas With Nemo

I am an experienced diver and I am keen to try the “Epcot DiveQuest” experience which is a unique scuba diving encounter inside the 5.7 million gallon saltwater tank – the second largest salt water aquarium in the world.  You can swim with over 6,000 sea creatures including sea turtles, angelfish, dolphins, eagle rays and sharks.

You must be SCUBA-certified and at least 10 years of age to participate. Guests ages 10 to 12 must be accompanied by a paying, participating parent or guardian. The cost of the experience is $175.00, all diving equipment is provided but you can take your own dive mask and dive computer along if you wish.

Dive Quest at Epcot

The experience lasts 3 hours, and you spend approximately 40 minutes underwater in the massive Caribbean Coral Reef aquarium – which until 2005 was the largest saltwater tank in the world. The tour also allows you to see the massive backstage infrastructure required to filter and maintain a vast manmade ocean flourishing with life.

With its clear water and lack of currents and waves, Epcot DiveQuest is an experience that both diving enthusiasts and Disney fans are sure to find thrilling. Where else in the world can you swim with sharks and sea turtles while simultaneously waving to people enjoying a sit-down meal?

Aqua Tour at Epcot

For children or those who are not scuba certified, like me, but wish to get a closer look at the remarkable aquatic life in The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion “The Seas Aqua Tour” allows Guests to swim on the surface of the tank by an air snorkel system. The minimum age for this experience is 8 and those aged between 8 and 12 must be accompanied by a paying, participating adult. The cost of this experience is $140. The experience lasts 2.5 hours, and you will spend approximately 30 minutes swimming in the aquarium. All snorkelling equipment is provided.

If you wish to learn about, and get up close with, Disney’s dolphins you can also take the “Dolphins in Depth Tour” which allows you to get close to these remarkable aquatic mammals.

Dolphin in Depth at Epcot

Dolphins are some of the smartest, most playful and most majestic animals in the ocean. The Dolphins in Depth program will allow you to learn more about these fascinating creatures and their unique undersea behaviour. You can talk to the expert trainers and researchers who work with dolphins every day. The tour concludes with a very special opportunity for an up-close interaction with a dolphin—perfect for pictures and memories that will last forever.

You do not need to be able to swim to take part in the Dolphin in Depth Tour but you will need to be at least 13 years of age. All participants under the age of 18 years must have a parent or guardian along with them on the tour. The cost of this experience is $194

Whichever experience you choose I am sure that it will be an unforgettable encounter with this amazing aquatic world.

A Trip to St Augustine – Florida’s Oldest City

St Augustine from the air

If you feel like a change from Disney and would like to find out more about Florida’s history, then take a drive over to the East coast and visit St. Augustine. It is only about 107m from Orlando, so less than a two hour drive from your villa.

Occupying a stretch of gentle coastline and white sand beaches along the North Florida Atlantic Coast, St. Augustine attracts thousands of visitors each year who enjoy the history, community, beauty and ambience of America’s oldest city.

St Augustine - Lighthouse Museum

St Augustine was first established under Spanish rule in 1565, making it the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States. In the years after its founding, the city shifted to British rule for a period and then transferred back to Spanish control in 1783. In 1821 the United States purchased the area that included St. Augustine from Spain.

It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the city really began to develop as a popular tourist location under the entrepreneurial eye of oil magnate Henry Flagler who saw the advantages of having wealthy, Northern Visitors coming to St Augustine for their winter retreat.

St Augustine - Flagler College

Flagler brought the railroad to St Augustine and by doing so encouraged many wealthy people to visit St Augustine and stay in the hotels that he had built. These hotels were very large and opulent, the grandest being the Ponce De Leon Hotel, which is now home to Flagler College. St Augustine is a great place to spend a day or more, if time allows.

Visit the first Catholic Church to be built in the United States – Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church. Built in 1890 by Henry Flagler, in memory of his daughter, Jennie Louise Benedict, who died in childbirth. Henry Flagler, his first wife, Mary, his daughter Jennie and granddaughter, Marjorie, are all laid to rest in the family mausoleum. The beautiful church has lovely stained windows.

St Augustine - Ripleys Believe It Or Not

The Bridge of Lions takes you across to Anastasia Island where you can visit the Alligator Farm – Crocs, Gators, Birds, Mammals and Reptiles (12 and older $21.95, 3-11 $10.95 – hours 9-5).

The very first Ripley’s “Believe it or Not” is in St Augustine in the Castle Warden building on San Marco Ave. It has housed Ripley’s collection of oddities since 1950.

St Augustine - Fountain of Youth

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a 15 acre waterfront historical site where St. Augustine, Florida began. This is where Spanish Explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles, established the first and oldest continuous European Settlement in the United States of America. You can even drink from the legendary waters and see if your visit grants you the secret to eternal youth. Although despite my efforts, I have not seen any discernable changes, perhaps I needed to drink some more!

St Augustine - Horse Drawn Carriage

Enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride along narrow, tree-lined streets. As you slowly pass by centuries old structures, your driver will narrate the story of old Saint Augustine, a great way to learn about this historic city which boasts 36 original colonial buildings and 40 reconstructed buildings.

Take some time to sit, relax and enjoy the view from the city plaza; formerly the old slave market. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the diverse architecture, If all that history makes you thirsty, then visit the San Sebastian Winery, located at 157 King Street (10-6 Mon. thru Sat. 11-6 Sun) It offers free winery tours and wine tasting daily. The winery is a great place to visit and also pick up a few bottles of good, local wine to take back to the villa and enjoy. We have enjoyed several and can highly recommend the Blanc du Bois which is very similar to a Sauvignon Blanc and costs around $12 per bottle.

St Augustine has many motels / hotels and most popular chain restaurants, as well as some really nice independent restaurants.

Have fun and enjoy.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Celebrates its 1st Birthday at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure

Harry Potter Hogwarts

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter celebrated its first birthday this week, having established an enthusiastic theme park following in its first year. Visitors to Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park can pass through the towering Hogwarts castle gates and explore the familiar passageways, classrooms and corridors. The rides including Dragon Challenge, Flight of the Hippogriff, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a state-of-the-art attraction that brings the magic, characters, and stories of Harry Potter to life in ways never before imagined.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Of course a visit is not complete without a trip to the shops of Hogsmeade to sample fare from the Wizarding world’s best-known establishments, including the Three Broomstick and the Hog’s Head. Visitors can go inside Hogwarts castle, swig two kinds of Butterbeer and buy magic wands and other Wizarding wonders. I am sure that when we visit with our daughter we will also be stopping by Dervish and Banges to buy all of the Quidditch paraphernalia and I feel sure a Hogwarts school uniform and robe is high up on the wish list. I also have it on good authority that a trip to Zonko’s Joke shop is not to be missed.

Inside Hogwarts with animated "paintings"

There is no disputing the phenomenal popularity of Harry Potter and its fans have helped make Islands of Adventure the fastest-growing theme park in the world last year and indeed having not visited the park on our last few visits to Orlando, it is without question the reason that Universal Islands of Adventure is once again on my families list of top places to visit on our next trip. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey has also been voted the best theme park ride in America by readers of the Theme Park Insider. My family are very excited to ride the attraction to see if we agree with this accolade.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter opening ceremony

Having spoken to fans who have visited the attraction it is clear that much as they have loved the experience they would be keen to see expansion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to include attractions that encompass events in other Harry Potter books. There is a much rumoured, but unconfirmed, roller coaster project based on Grigotts bank.

Other popular ideas for additions to the park are attractions based on the Shrieking Shack, Diagon Alley, the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes joke shop, a Chamber of Secrets restaurant and a Quidditch experience. We will all have to wait and see how Universal chooses to capitalise on the huge popularity of Harry Potter……fans love The Wizarding World of Harry Potter but there is no doubt that they have been left wanting more and I am sure that Universal will have something up the sleeve of its Griffindor Robe

Flight of the Hippogriff ride

Aerial view of Wizarding World of Harry Potter

I will blog again after our next visit to Orlando to update you with our experiences and opinions of the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter attractions.

The final Potter film. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” premieres on 7th July before going on general release on 15th July. I will definitely be booking our tickets.
